Choosing Riding Gear: How to Read the Labels
Choosing riding gear starts with knowing what a label actually tells you. Our full Safety Guide explains, with sources, how motorcycle garments and impact protectors are rated in Europe, the UK and the US, and what riding-safety organisations recommend.
In short
- Helmet first. In the US, look for a helmet meeting FMVSS 218 (the DOT symbol).
- Garment ratings belong to finished garments. EN 17092 classes (AAA, AA, A, B, C) are awarded to a specific garment model after testing, and are shown on a label inside the garment. A fabric on its own cannot carry a class.
- Protectors are rated separately. EN 1621-1 (limbs) and EN 1621-2 (back) have Level 1 and Level 2, based on how much force passes through in a standard test.
- Complete the kit with gloves, boots that cover the ankle, and bright or reflective clothing.
Where Denimotto fits
Denimotto makes denim jeans, jackets and vests in 23 colours, in standard sizes or cut to your measurements, with removable inserts in the jeans and jackets. We don't publish test reports, certificates or protection classes for our garments or inserts; see Testing & Certification Information. If you need a certified protection class, check the garment's label and documentation before you buy.
